Stories One

Stories One is a MMO battle royal with card games mechanics on which I worked as a Senior 3D game artist, at Gabsee.

I tackled world building, level design, level building, fxs, shaders, rigging, animations and illustrations tasks.

A mobile open world for a battle royal, by night

On Stories One, we worked on the open world using a non destructive workflow allowing us to move entire points of interest by making them « stamps », groups which could modify the relief and textures of the terrain as we moved them. Creating a night atmosphere with a limited amount of lights was one of the challenges we faced, as we had to work with shaders and vertex color to create contrast and guidance.

Creating an appealing card deck

Players could collect cards in the world and use points to buy them. We wanted them to be fun to look at and they were a good opportunity to deepen the early 90’s theme of the game. We posed our avatars and created backgrounds to take screenshots of, assembling and polishing them in Photoshop.

Reworking the avatar’s facial rig and animating robots

We decided to rework on the project Hawkins avatar’s facial rig, in order to give them more flexibility and higher level of expression details. To do so, I used 3D textured meshes to create the eyes, eyebrows and mouth, which could get deformed by a large variety of blendshapes instead of being sprites to swap between. I rigged the robots using the Maya Auto Rigging tool, in order to apply Mixamo animations as a base and modify them with animation layers.
